Kadappa

This dish symbolizes the culinary tradition of Kumbakonam and one of the favourite recipes of our family. Its actually called Kadappa

Ingredients
Moong dhal- 1 cup
Potato-2 medium size cut into cubes
Green chillies-2(slit into two)
Tomato-1 medium
Onion-1 medium
curry leaves and mustard for seasoning

Grind to paste
Poppy seeds- couscous-2 teaspoons
Saunf(Peruncheeragam)-1 teaspoon(soak the poppy seeds and saunf for half an hour for the paste to give a smooth consistency)
Ginger-1 inch piece
Coconut- 3 Tablespoons

Smooth paste of the above. You can add water when you grind.

Procedure
1.Pressure cook the moong dhal, potato and green chilly.(2 whistles is enough)
2.Once the pressure cools down, add onion, tomato and salt. Pressure cook again.(one whistle is enough)

3.Once the pressure cools down add the paste.Simmer it for 10 minutes.
4.Season it with mustard and curry leaves and serve it with idli or dosa.Consistency should like sambar not like khurma. As both poppy and coconut has got a tendency to thicken the khurma, you can check out and add water if it's needed for the sambar type consistency.
